Gold Star Kenya under the FHI 360 led, USAID funded LINKAGES project implemented comprehensive combination intervention program in Kilifi County aimed at mobilizing, enrolling and networking the targeted KP peers, their peer educators and selected health facilities to access FSW-friendly continuum of services, develop referral networks and link FSWs to an established Drop in Centre (DIC) in Kilifi County.
The program provided services through one drop-in centre in Malindi town which served as a safe space for female sex workers as well as a clinic that offered comprehensive HIV prevention and treatment services including; HIV testing, STI screening, family planning, ART, sexual and gender-based services and HIV risk reduction counselling.
GS Kenya supported 80 peer educators and six outreach workers in the earlier years but that reduced to 25 peer educators and three outreach workers starting 2018. The peer educators and outreach workers supported peer education in Malindi, Magarini and Kilifi North to reach 3,970 FSW with HIV prevention services at 145 hot spots. They provided health education, condom demonstration, and distribution, including reporting incidents of violence and referring clients for biomedical/clinical services.
